Your $ at Work
Simply put, your donations make our community a healthier place to live, and ensure that your family members, friends and neighbours have access to high quality healthcare services, close to home.
Below are a few examples of how your recent contributions have made a difference.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Expansion
The ICU has been expanded from 12 to 18 beds, thanks entirely to community contributions. In addition, vital ICU equipment was purchased including:
- Cardiac Monitoring System – enables cardiac and respiratory activity to be monitored at the nursing station for immediate response. (cost: $180,000)
- Cooling Blankets – used for patients who have survived a cardiac arrest but are still critically ill, the cooling blanket is used to lower the body’s temperature and metabolic rate which in turn reduces the body's oxygen consumption and the work of the heart muscle. (cost: $18,000)
- Oscillator Ventilators – for use with patients for whom all other modes of ventilation, or assisted breathing, are not working, this type of ventilator provides very small frequent breaths. (cost: $61,000)
Priority Equipment Needs
Each year, the OTMH Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) identifies new and/or replacement equipment, so that our community can have access to the best healthcare services possible. Recently, your contributions have led to the purchase of vital equipment for OTMH, including:
- Arthroscopes & Monitors – This equipment will allow OTMH to offer more complex surgical procedures here in our community. The new technology allows us to perform surgeries faster and with more accurate results. For patients it means a dramatic reduction in the amount of pain involved and a shorter recovery time. (cost: $207,000)
- Blood Gas Analyzers – These machines measure and analyze the gases in a patient’s blood stream. It provides important information for patients on ventilators and to the treatment team working to stabilise patients in critical care. (cost: $37,600 each)
- Isolette – the new Isolette creates a much quieter environment for the premature baby cocooned inside. More portholes allow staff to access the baby for interventions and comfort measures. And because it’s height adjustable, mothers in wheelchairs are able to remain at eye-level with their baby. (cost: $44,000)
- EEG Machine – full name: electroencephalograph. The EEG monitors your brain, and such technology is indispensable when it comes to treating conditions of the brain and nervous system. (cost: $65,000)
- Sleeper Chairs – Patients often need the comfort of having their family members close by. Five sleeper chairs have been purchased for use in the 4th floor patient rooms to enable families to rest close by or even stay the night. (cost: $1,800 each)
